Find out more about MacKenzie and how the diagnosis of epilepsy came about!

Hi! My name is MacKenzie and I am 6-1/2-years-old (my birthday is in March!). I live in Lansing, Michigan with my mom, step-dad and my two sisters, Sarah and Jadyn. I am the middle child. I am in 1st grade now! I really enjoy cheerleading, riding my bike, and playing outside.

I was born in Monroe, Louisiana and lived there until I was just over 2-years-old when me, my mom and my sister Sarah moved to Georgia. We lived there for a little over a year and then we moved to Michigan!

When I was 5 years and 4 months old, I had my first seizure when I was visiting my dad in Jackson, Michigan. I spent 1-1/2 days in the hospital where they ran lots of tests on me. They didn't find anything significant (that's what my mom says). Then in October, I bumped my head while playing in McDonald's playplace and got a concussion. After my mom and Scott (he's my step-dad) took me to the emergency room, they did a CT scan and found a lesion on my brain. I had to have an MRI done 2 weeks later and they confirmed the spot in my brain.Thankfully, it was nothing life-threatening, but they didn't know what it was.

My new baby sister, Jadyn, was born on 12/9/00 and I had my second grand mal seizure in the hall of the hospital when she was just 3-1/2 hours old. I had my 3rd seizure on 12/12/00 at home. That was when the doctor put me on Tegretol. I took it 3 times a day, and I didn't think it tastes very good!

I had my 4th seizure on 1/16/01 and quit breathing. Scott had to help me start breathing again. The doctor decided to make my medicine stronger. I had to go have an EEG done on 2/1/00 to see if they can find anything in my brain!

Since then, my mom and Scott have been able to determine that I am also having absence seizures. Sometimes, I just black-out and fall (usually resulting in me hitting my head which scares my mom!), but sometimes things will go all black and fuzzy around me and I see and feel funny things. The doctor told my mom the other day that the medicine won't help those kinds of seizures! That didn't make her too happy.

I drew a picture of what it looks like when I have absence seizures:
